What does a disability support worker do?

A support worker helps someone with a disability do the things they would do themselves if they could. That might be showering and dressing in the morning, cooking and the shopping, a lift to an appointment, or going along to something they would not do on their own.

Under the NDIS it is usually funded from core supports, billed by the hour, and delivered by a provider that employs or contracts the worker. What it looks like depends entirely on the person: two people with the same funding can use it completely differently.

The thing that matters most is the fit. A support worker is often in someone's home, at their most private moments, several times a week. Good providers introduce a worker before regular support starts and will find someone else without fuss if it is not right. You can ask about personal care, help around the house or getting out and about separately, or all three.

How it works

Three steps, and you're talking to a support worker

  1. Tell us what's needed

A few quick questions about who the support is for, where you are and what would help. It takes about two minutes.

  2. We find a provider with capacity

We pass your details to one registered NDIS provider near you who has support workers available now.

  3. They get in touch

The provider calls to talk through hours, who would come and when they could start.

Your details only go to the support worker we match you with. If they can't help, we'll find someone who can. More about how it works

How we check providers

How disability support is funded

Disability support is a capacity building support in an NDIS plan. Newer plans list it as its own Behaviour Support category; older plans fund it from Improved Relationships. However the plan is managed, it has to be delivered by a registered NDIS provider.

Not sure what's in your plan? That's fine. The support worker will go through it with you.

Questions people ask

Does it cost anything to use this service?

No. It's free for you. Providers pay us when we introduce them to someone, which is how we keep it free. They can't charge you more because they found you through us, and the NDIS price limits still apply.

Are you the NDIS, or a support provider?

Neither. supportworkersfordisabilities.com.au is an independent service that connects people with registered NDIS providers. We're not part of the NDIA or the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and we don't deliver support ourselves.

How much does a support worker cost?

For NDIS participants it comes out of core supports. In 2026-27 the price limit for standard assistance with self-care is $73.58 an hour on a weekday daytime, $103.54 on a Saturday and $133.50 on a Sunday. A provider can charge less, but not more.

Can we choose who comes?

Providers usually introduce a worker before regular support starts, and most will try to match a preference about gender or language. If it isn't the right fit you can ask for someone else, and a good provider won't make that awkward.

Do I need an NDIS plan?

Most people we help have support funded in an NDIS plan. If you're waiting on a plan, or not on the NDIS at all, you can still get in touch. Some providers take privately paying clients, and we'll be honest if we can't help.

I'm a support coordinator. Can I refer someone?

Yes. Use the referral form, or choose 'I'm a support coordinator or plan manager' in the questions above. Please make sure the participant or their nominee has agreed to the referral first.
